Wake County Volunteer System FAQ
Q: What does volunteer registration mean? What is this anyway?
A: All potential volunteers with WCPSS must register before participating in events or activities where they will interact with students. This process includes signing up at a WCPSS school, and agreeing to a criminal background check performed by a company hired by WCPSS. For more information, see the WCPSS site: myvolunteer.com/wcpss/volunteer/login
Q: What activities require volunteer registration?
A: Any event or activity on Cary Elementary School grounds where you are interacting with children. Examples include: field day, field trips, Spring Talent Show, etc.
Q: What activities can I participate in without registering as a volunteer?
A: Events that are not on school grounds or don't directly involve interacting with kids. Examples include: the Downtown Cary Farmer's Market Fall Festival, PTA meetings, etc. When in doubt, get registered.
Q: I registered last year or sometime in the past. Do I need to register it again?
A: Everyone has to re-register for the 2023-24 school year, even if you've registered in years past!
Q: How can I find out if I have been approved?
A: You will receive an email confirmation from myvolunteer.com. You can also login at mycolunteer.com to check the current status.
Q: How long will it take until I find out if I am cleared?
A: It is generally expected that registration will take 2 weeks to 1 month. The amount of time it takes to process volunteer requests and background checks varies depending on the volume of requests. The highest volume occurs at the beginning of the school year. Parents and other volunteers are encouraged to register as early in the school year as possible.
Q: Can I volunteer at my child's school while I am waiting for notification?
A: No. Unfortunately, all volunteers must register and receive clearance notification before volunteering at their children's schools. This is per WCPSS Board Policy.
Q: I am a WCPSS employee. Do I need to register if I want to volunteer in my child's school?
A: No. WCPSS employees do not have to register as volunteers to perform volunteer roles outside of their job assignment, such as volunteering for their own child's school and/or class.
