ADVOCACY

What exactly is ADVOCACY?
PTA advocacy can be summed up in six simple words: speaking up for children and families.
Picture

More specifically, ADVOCACY looks like:
  • helping a child find their voice when they are afraid to tell their teacher that a child in their class is bothering them.
  • helping a child find the right words to ask their teacher about something they don’t understand in class.
  • making sure PTA communications and meetings are translated to speak to a non-English speaking parent who is interested in getting involved or finding help for their child.
  • working with school social workers to ensure that every child has uninterrupted access to school meals.
  • making space for voices informed by a variety of cultural and lived experiences.
  • celebrating our differences as well as our universally-shared beliefs and priorities.

YOU are an advocate. We are all advocates. Our voices are important. We are creating change. Never forget the impact you are having on children as a PTA advocate!

Advocacy Programs and opportunities to serve at Cary Elementary School

The Cary Christmas Store

In December, we will partner with the First Cary United Methodist Church who hosts the annual Cary Christmas Store. Qualifying families will be invited to shop for donated items at affordable prices. Approximately 100 families (200-300 children) will be served this year across multiple locations in Cary. Donations will be accepted in late November and the first week of December. See flyer for specific details. Please contact Katie Herndon to stay in the loop.

Translation help

Our Hispanic Liaison, Viviana Valle Solorzano, tirelessly ensures that our emails, Facebook posts, important announcements, and PTA in-person meeting communications are provided in Spanish as well as English. We could use more help translating all communications (including this page 😀), and your expertise in other languages spoken at Cary Elementary would also be valuable additions. Please contact the communications committee.

Want to Get Involved?
Wonderful! We are delighted to hear your thoughts and ideas. We are working on a number of new ideas for the 2022-2023 school year and beyond (e.g. celebrations and observances of cultural heritage months). If you'd like to be involved or have other suggestions, please contact Katie Herndon, PTA Advocacy Chair.
